Keeping tabs on the legislature
Ever wondered what new ways the legislature has complicated the tax code? Good luck finding out! I’ll admit that the legislature’s nifty “rippling” picture can be pretty entertaining for the bored researcher. But when it comes to learning something about laws, the website is not terribly helpful. You are okay if you know what bill number to look up. But without that, you are out of luck. The website’s full text search engine doesn’t deliver on its promise and its PDF-format subject index is positively clunky.
New Mexicans aren’t the only ones who find their legislature’s website annoying. Political entrepreneurs in Michigan were so fed up with their legislature’s website that they started MichiganVotes.org, a fully-searchable (really!) website with easy-to-understand explanations for every bill. We don’t have a New Mexico Votes (yet), but until we do, I found the good folks at Modrall-Sperling quite helpful in spelling-out tax law changes.
