Education key to breaking out of poverty

Rarely do I see articles that make me say “I couldn’t say that better myself.” One of those rare occasions came this week when I saw Joe Montes’ article on the need for educational choice in New Mexico and how it can help move our children and our state out of poverty.

To be fair, Montes obviously “gets it” because he runs the state wide chapter of Americans for Prosperity, a group that supports free markets and individual liberty. Nonetheless, we hope that legislators in Santa Fe will take some action this session to bring greater educational options to New Mexico’s children.

We chose to pull our daughter after 5th grade and homeschool, which has really brought her up into and above her grade level in some things. I think this would be a great way for us to offer her even more with and online school and a chance at higher eduation later on. How can we expect our state to go anywhere when we are not sealing our future with well educated children?

Pre K school seems to help. I support this addition in all NM Public Schools.
Can I hear why Pre K programs are not the way to go?

Skandera OKs online school despite opposition

“New Mexico education chief Hanna Skandera, overruling the state Public Education Commission this week, will allow a new all-online charter school to open in the fall.”

“The Albuquerque Journal reported that the school will be called New Mexico Connections Academy and will contract with the online, for-profit curriculum company Connections Academy. The school aims to serve students in grades K-12 from around the state.”
